Lowell AmiotteI was born at Pine Ridge, South Dakota, home to the Oglala Lakota (Sioux). I have spent the last 44 years in education. During that time I helped start three different tribally controlled colleges. I helped establish the American Indian Higher Education Consortium and served on the board of directors for three years. I was a founding member and served as president of the South Dakota Indian Education Association, the South Dakota American Indian Counselor Association, and the South Dakota Association of Bilingual/Bicultural Education and was selected to be a representative to the White House Conference on Indian Education. I was the president of Oglala Lakota College and Associate Professor at Black Hills State University and South Dakota State University in their Colleges of Education. I have been awarded two honorary doctorates. Because of health concerns I have been retired for almost 5 years.
